Hueppi machine washable kids rug styled in a children's room

The complete guide to machine washable kids’ rugs

Juice, paint, muddy knees, the occasional accident. Childhood is messy, and a rug in a child’s room should be able to keep up.

The short answer

A machine washable kids’ rug can go in a home washing machine instead of needing professional cleaning. Hueppi rugs wash on a delicate 30°C cycle, dry flat, and are woven flat so stains sit on the surface rather than sinking into deep pile.

Why washable matters in a child’s room

Most rugs are made to be looked at. Kids’ rugs are made to be lived on: crawled across, built on, eaten on, slept on in the middle of the afternoon. A rug you can wash at home turns every spill from a small disaster into a laundry day.

It is also about what you can’t see. Washing removes the dust, crumbs and everyday grime that collect in any floor covering, which matters in a room where children spend so much time close to the floor.

What to look for in a washable rug

  • A flat weave. Thin, flat rugs fit in a home machine and dry faster than thick pile.
  • A backing that survives washing. Hueppi uses a non-slip synthetic latex backing that doesn’t dry out or break down over time.
  • Colours that stay bright. Our rugs are coloured with water-based Italian dyes, made to keep their colour wash after wash.
  • Clear care instructions. If a brand can’t tell you exactly how to wash it, it probably isn’t truly washable.

How to wash a Hueppi rug

  1. Blot fresh spills straight away with a clean cloth. Don’t rub.
  2. Machine wash on its own, on a delicate cycle at 30°C.
  3. Use a liquid detergent and skip the softener.
  4. Lay flat to dry. No tumble dryer.

A washing machine with an 8 kg capacity is recommended. Full care instructions are on every product page.

Wash smart, and less

Washable doesn’t mean washing every week. Vacuum regularly, spot clean as you go, and save the machine for the days that really need it. Adding laundry balls helps reduce microfibres washing out to sea.
